This is an interview, filmed in July 2009, about my novel, Lip Reader, and my journey with hearing loss as a young adult. For more details about Lip Reader, visit shannagroves.blogspot.com.
For writers of all genres who want to bring subjects and characters into their work which may not fit into the stereotypical mold of moral perfection so common in CBA fiction.
Shanna Groves is the author of Lip Reader, a coming of age novel centered on a family dealing with hearing loss in 1980s Oklahoma. Her short stories have appeared in various compilations, including A Cup of Comfort, and she has contributed to The Kansas City Star, MomSense magazine, and Hearing Loss magazine. Her writing focus includes hearing loss issues, of which she has dealt with personally for several years. Shanna is a popular blogger and speaker and can be reached through her Web site.
Hello, Shanna. You and I have been friends for a while here on Edgy Christian, but I am just now getting around to spending time on everyone's profile. I checked out your blog and I feel inspired by your dedication to writing and to life in general, despite the challenges you face. It is an encouragement to see someone work through their setbacks in life and continue to follow after the goals and dreams they have. Glad to have you as a friend on here and I will continue to follow your blog and your story :)
It's so nice to meet you, Shanna. I visited your blog and want to tell you how inspired I feel. When we lived in Baytown, a dear friend of mine had two deaf children, (something genetic). We had them over often, so I took sign language lessons for a while. It was such a joy, and I was delighted when God introduced other occasions for me to use what I had learned.
Thank you for asking about my writing. I have one completed manuscript, and am working on its sequel. Originally it was one book, but it was very long and there was a natural break, so I broke it into. I've spent the last ten months reworking the first part into a full story that can stand alone if it has to. It's about good intentions, impatience, mistakes, and forgiveness. Well...there's more to it, but that the super short version. Right now I'm shopping for an agent. It's being considered by a small press, which is exciting, but scary too. So, I'm just praying A LOT and seeing what happens.
