I believe this is largely market driven - if the first of a series does well, you can be guaranteed the remaining will similarly succeed. I do like the long series, partly because I hate for the stories to end :-)

I think you said a mouthful. "A little action" is something many men crave - conflict, struggle, challenges of a more physical nature perhaps? My book is set in a war-torn country in Africa, climaxing during a United Nations invasion.
