What bothers me is that sex is a no-no, but a good innocent murder is okay. Sorry, but that seems twisted to me. I write about sex and sometimes push the envelope both in describing it and in just exactly what marriage is. What court house did Adam and Eve go to for their marriage license? Just wondered. It's at least worth an intelligent discussion from a Christian POV in my opinion.
Very intelligent article, and I couldn't agree more, but it's only a start. I just wish somebody could explain to me why decapitation, running someone through with a sword or watching people burn to death is acceptable for good Christian writing, but making love isn't. I have heard murder mystery writers say that the bad guy always gets caught in the end. So what? Besides, is that realistic?
OMG, yes! I'll never forget hearing a ''Christian Author" say she doesn't mind profanity, murder, violence, mayhem and sex in secular novels, but would be bothered by them in Christian novels.
But I think it's more that "some" like to separate their secular lives from their Christian lives. If you put all of that in a Christian novel...they are confused.
It's okay to listen to secular music monday thru saturday...on Sunday they tune into gospel.
They will read (and watch movies) that are filled with secular things...but when they are ready to read "Christian" they need to feel clean.
To me it's weird. God is involved in every aspect of my life. Even when I was a sinner doing stupid things...he was right there shaking his head wondering when I was gonna get it together. LOL
So I can't write perfect people who don't do anything bad. I've never met anybody like that. LOL
Zaria,
Then we've met the same people! I haven't met a perfect one yet either. Most people will tell you that good writing needs to deal with conflict. Why not write about the real conflicts in real people (even the Christians) instead of contriviing vanila conflicts for cookie cutter people that we all know don't really exist? I can't help it. That's how my characters end up. Imperfect.

You know, we're supposed to be Christians 24/7 and that to me means being real, too. How are we supposed to ever show people that they need what we have found in Christ if we pretend to be perfect, or better than we really are, when we are all sinners saved by grace?
Agreed! How do you show what Christ can really do in our lives, if we don't show what we're like without Him? I think we also need to show that even when we know Him, we stumble. How else do you deal with the concept of forgiveness?
Amen boys and girls...I have to tell you a little story. I belong to another writer's and reader's group on the net, and awhile ago I asked a person that I felt was a very good writer and reviewer if they wanted to give my book a shot. We were very cordial to one another and the person seemed so nice, Christian-like.
I got back a note after about twenty minutes from the time I had given out my web-site and pretty much was 'shot' down by the verbal put down. Uh? The guest had begun to read the chapter samples online and never made it passed page two. Too edgy?
Then told me...In not so many words my book was not suitable for the Christians that read this person's reviews.
What? Had I heard that right? Indignant as I was...I live my life by the old saying, “What would Jesus do?” and replied in a polite manner. Then found the closest pillow to scream into...#%*!
