Partial scene...very edgy. So what do you think? I cut off the beginning and end on purpose so you won't see how it started or ended. Then you'll need to read the book...

His face lit with the boyish expectation of a small child. She didn't want to hurt his feelings by saying no, but she wasn’t exactly ready to say yes, either.

What to do? We’ll have four years to fine-tune the details. I love his family, and it would be nice to marry a pastor’s son. I can’t bear the thought of losing him.

She nibbled on her lower lip. Finally, she chose what would make him happiest despite her reservations. “I suppose we can be officially engaged four years.”

“You will?”

“I think—”

Tony's warm lips covered hers as he wove his fingers into her loose hair. While his enthusiasm excited her, it also struck a chord of terror deep within. Did he think his proposal and her acceptance gave him permission to indulge sexually? Had she made a mistake?

His silky kisses grew more intense and he eased her back on the couch. Usually when they kissed they stood upright. She suddenly felt vulnerable as he pinned her with his weight. He shifted and propped his head with one hand, adjusting so he wasn’t directly on top of her.

His free hand slipped from her hair and wandered to the front of her shirt. Her chest tightened as he grasped her gently and squeezed. He’d tried the same thing before, but she managed to evade his advances. This time she hesitated too long.

And now they were alone.

She shouldn’t have let him in.

While she pondered her choices, he grew bolder with his hands. She enjoyed the sensations at first, but couldn't breathe when she thought about doing it with him…and in her parents’ home. Things were happening too fast.

She told him many times she wasn’t ready for sex; that she wanted to be married in the eyes of God when she entrusted her heart and body to a man for the first time. She wanted something precious to offer her husband. Something pure and beautiful that couldn’t be taken from her. That included no regrets.

Obviously he didn’t plan to stop, so she needed to be strong. She tried to push him off, but he wouldn’t budge. His muscular arms clasped her tight. Finally, she shoved him hard enough to demand his attention. “Stop.”

With a heavy sigh, he shuddered and finally relented. “You are too hands-off.”

“Well, you're a bit too touchy-feely for me tonight. I…I think you’d better go.” She glanced away, unable to watch his reaction for fear she’d weaken. Those warm, brown eyes always caused her to melt inside when he smiled. She needed to be careful. What if her parents arrived home early? What if she lost control and didn’t want him to stop?

“I’m not ready to leave. Come on, you know I won’t bite. We’ve been going out forever, and I’ve never forced you to do anything you didn’t want to do, right? I'll hold off if you give me something else to do with my hands.”

She wasn’t sure she believed him, but the innocent look in his eyes persuaded her to give him the benefit of the doubt. “All right, but one more slip and you're out of here, Mister.”

“Deal. So you got anything tasty to eat?” He rubbed his hands together. “I'm starved.”

She snickered, “I was going to nuke some extra-butter popcorn. Would that satisfy your manly appetite?”

His mouth curved into a wry grin. “I thought we weren't going there.”

“Um, yeah. I didn't mean it that way.”

He snorted, “Yeah, right. I think you enjoy teasing me.”

Placing her hands on her hips, she snapped, “I do not. That was a mean thing to say.”

“Whatever.” He smiled again, his eyes expressing a wicked gleam

Her rising anger compelled her to smack the smirk off his face. He had some nerve bossing her around. But then again, she’d let him come inside. She grunted and left the room to make popcorn before she said something she’d regret.

Returning to the room with a hot bowl of popcorn, she gestured for him to scoot over. He chuckled, “Man, you want to take the fun out of everything, don’t you?”

“No…” She giggled at the funny look on his face. “I’m just trying to keep you from messing around with me.”

“I told you I won’t as long you keep me busy.” He cupped his hands. “Fill ‘em with that delicious popcorn and I’ll be respectfully occupied, I swear.”

“You shouldn’t swear.” She sighed at how lame she sounded. And so goodie-two-shoes. Handing him the bowl, she set down their drinks on the coffee table and slid beside him, making sure to leave a few inches between their legs. Reaching for the control box, she pushed PLAY.

The movie resumed and he groaned, “Not some mushy chick-flick.”

“What else is there?” She laughed.

“You’re teasing me again. Watching all of that hugging and kissing will drive me crazy.” He stuffed a handful of popcorn into his mouth and chewed. Before he swallowed, he smiled.

“You’re so uncouth.” She poked him in the chest. “You know that?”

He grabbed his drink, gulped, and set it down. “Is there anything you like about me?”

She shrugged. “Sure. Just not watching you talk with your mouth full. Now be quiet and watch the movie, will you?”

“Well, if that’s all you dislike about me there’s no way I’m watching this flick when I could be kissing your hot lips instead.”

“Tony….”

He shoved the popcorn bowl out of the way. “Please, just one more kiss? Then I promise I’ll back off.”

She rolled her eyes. “You don’t know how to stop. You think I’m stupid enough to let you get started again? My parents would die if they found out I had you in their house alone, not to mention if I actually did…stuff with you.”

“But we’re engaged now. And you love me, right?”

Her eyes narrowed. He was trying to trap her again. “You know I do.”

“Then kiss me. Please.”

She sighed. “It’s not about that.”

“So who cares what your parents will think?”

“I do. They trust me.”

“But what about me? Don’t I matter?” He placed his hands on the sides of her face and whispered, “I need you. Can you see that? I only want what’s best for you. For us.”

Staring at him, she contemplated his words. Technically if they got married he would be the only man she’d ever have sex with. But how would going against her beliefs be best for her? And so many things could go wrong. She wanted to insist they wait, but that wasn’t what slipped out. “I suppose we—”

He pressed his lips against hers. Slowly opening his mouth, he explored hers with such abandon she sensed he wouldn’t stop despite what he promised. Their heated exchange sent her mind into a tailspin and further eroded her resolve to remain pure. Before she lost all sense of self-control, she shoved him away and stood. “I told you no more! I…I can’t let you stay.”

His face reddened as he rose to meet her challenge. “See, you are a tease. Don’t deny it anymore. I’m on to you.”

His accusation stung. “W-what?”

The hurt look in his eyes made her pause. He clenched his fists and shook with anger, or frustration. She wasn’t sure which, but it scared her. She started to move toward him—to calm him—but stopped herself.

His eyes flared. “You’re no different than I am. You know it, so stop pretending.”

He made no sense. Now he was attacking her? What was wrong with him? “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“You’re such a faker. You’re pretending you don’t want me, just like you pretend to love God when you’re in church. But it’s not real. You just want to look good.”

Shocked, she stepped back, trembling. “Where is all this…this anger coming from?”

He leaned toward her and pointed, but didn’t say anything.

She stepped back. Is it that obvious I've had my doubts about us, about God?

Tony must’ve known he was losing his edge because he switched to a softer tone and poured on his usual charm. “Come on, Babe. Let’s marry this summer and live together at college. Then it’ll all be okay. You won’t feel like you’re sinning with me.”

That I’m sinning? What about you?

“You want to marry…this summer?” She blinked.

“Yeah. Why wait, right? Besides, I heard they give you more financial aid when you’re a married student.” He wiggled his brows. “Not to mention the other benefits.”

“I don’t know, Tony. Marriage is forever. What if it’s a mistake?”

“Being with you could never be a mistake. Think about it, Babe. And think about this… Did you know the Bible said it’s better to marry than burn with lust?”

She searched his eyes in hopes of finding the old Tony she loved. This sex-obsessed man was not the same guy she’d fallen in love with.

“I think I’ve heard that before.”

“Well, I’m burning for you, Annie, and I can’t stand it anymore. I think about making love with you all the time.” His eyes softened and passion exuded him. He touched her hair, sending delicious shivers down her back.

Her heart warmed and she closed her eyes. She really did love him. God help her, but she wanted him, too. But was that a good enough reason to marry him? What did God want?

As he drew her close and caressed her mouth with another kiss, her mind returned to his earlier accusation. A faker? Not a real Christian? What did he mean? She broke the kiss and glanced up at him.

His eyes had welled with unshed tears, making her heart go out to him. A single tear slid down his cheek. “I want you, Annie,” he whispered huskily, “I want you so much.”

She warmed from head to toe at the sound of his breathless voice, intense with emotion. She’d never seen Tony so distraught before, so needy. How could she continue to turn him down and reject him? It seemed unfair to hold out on him.

They’d be married soon anyway, right? But still…it was wrong. Against everything she believed in.

Her eyes stung and her throat tightened.

“Did you know in Bible times being engaged was the same as being married? That’s why it says Joseph planned to divorce Mary quietly, and that he didn’t lie with her until after she gave birth to Jesus.”

She blinked the tears back before they could spill over. She needed to be strong. “I’m not sure.” Her voice sounded thick, raspy.

“But it’s true.” He gazed into her eyes. “You’re just supposed to be with only one man or one woman. The marriage itself is just a legal ceremony, a piece of paper. God knows you’re the only one for me. I don’t need a certificate to prove that to anyone. Neither do you.”

Her chest tightened as her doubts increased. Maybe she was wrong to deny him what he wanted. She wanted it too, but more than that, she didn’t want to lose him. He already had a long line of female admirers. Any one of them would jump in to take her place if she broke up with him over sex. And now he was making too much sense. She’d heard the same argument from friends at school. But they weren’t Christians.

Maybe he was right… And he looked so good with his lover-boy grin and bedroom eyes begging her to love him that way. Her heart pounded. She wanted to make him happy. She wanted to share something special with him that would make him love her even more. Wouldn’t having sex with him seal their relationship in a special way since they were both virgins? She bit her lip and offered a shy smile despite her reservations.

He leaned toward her. She sensed from the gleam in his eyes that he perceived her change of heart. Air crackled around them. “I know you’ll enjoy this. It won’t hurt. I promise.”

Warmth coursed through her again until the enormity of what he’d said registered. She stiffened. “You sound like you have experience. I…I thought you were just like me. That you planned to wait.”

“I have waited. I’m still waiting. Too long. I’ve read up some on what to do, but I haven’t actually done it yet.” He touched her lower lip, tracing it to the corner as he smiled. Planting another feather-light kiss on her lips, he said, “I want you to be my first, my only.”

His words were so persuasive. Especially when he said he’d saved himself for her. Didn’t every woman want to hear that? And what if she didn’t do what he wanted? What if he couldn’t take the rejection this time and dumped her over it?

He seemed vulnerable as he offered his heart. How could she stomp on it?

Truth-be-told, she wouldn’t. A smile crept across her face. With no one to stop them, it seemed inevitable. That was why her parents warned her about spending time alone with Tony. They probably sensed she didn’t have the strength to deny him for long.

She no longer worried about betraying her parents’ trust. She wanted to make him happy.

“Okay,” she whispered, trembling. “I’m scared, but I—”

Tony kissed her as he tugged at her clothes until he’d freed her tee-shirt. He slipped his hands underneath and worked on unclipping her bra. He seemed to know right where to go to find the hook. “You won’t regret this, I swear.”

Every muscle in her body tensed. What if he’d lied to her about his experience? Would she come to regret it?

Not if I can keep him.

Once he succeeded at releasing the clasp, she sensed her bra loosening. He paused, peering intensely into her eyes as if gaging her response. He closed his eyes and kissed her again.

She couldn’t believe she was about to give him her most precious gift. What was she thinking? She had to find a way to stop him.

“Relax.” He whispered against her lips.

“Wait! What if I get pregnant! I’m sorry, I can’t…” She whimpered, now trembling to the point her teeth chattered.

He patted his back pocket. “I’ve got something. Trust me.”

He came prepared? What if it failed? It wasn’t a guarantee.

A sense of foreboding snaked up her spine and her shaking grew more pronounced. He must’ve thought she wanted more because it seemed to increase his fervor. He unsnapped his jeans and gently nudged her with his hips.

“I can’t!” she squeaked out.

I think it's way past time for us to deal with these issues realistically, as you have. I like it. Christians have the same issues as non Christians in this area, but if we don't put the right spin on things, who will? I say, go for it. Perhaps I should rephrase that. (g).

ROFLOL! You can be realistic without having the bad stuff actually happen. :) What I was trying to do is throw some lines out there that the reader might hear from a guy and put her into a situation beforehand, so if this actually does happen she will be mentally aware that she is being manipulated and will hopefully make the right choice....to say no..

Yes, I'm aware of that. What my scene attempted to do was show that it works both ways, and sometimes the woman can be the agressor, which is not always bad, I might add. There is much more going on in my scene both before and after, as I'm sure there is in yours. My real point is that the kind of edgy writing you used helps get to the discussion that needs to be had in a Christian context. If you can't even bring these types of scenes up as you can't in many traditional CBA lines, you can't have the discussion.

And just for the record, as I read your scene I was virtually screaming at your heroine, "Run away! Don't fall for it; it's a very old, tired line, and the fact that he came 'prepared' ought to make you think." And I'm a guy! (g)

Also for the record, from a guy's perspective, I'm going to give the women I use a spine and some spunk almost every time. That kind of a heroine is much more interesting to me and also more likely to get herself in edgy situations which gives us more to write about. (g)

Yeah, this is Annie "before". Believe me, her spine stiffens big time. :) But her basic personality as a people pleaser causes her problems for sure. Oh, and in case you think what happens to her is cliche, it's not. LOL! I don't take you anywhere near where you might think this story is going. I love to tease my readers. Mean, huh?

Reply to This

So it's you that's the tease, huh? That isn't a nice thing to do, especially to guys. We are basically simple, trusting souls, and I said that with a straight face. ..almost.

Michelle, this is good. I love the way you get into your heroine's head and present her struggle in the face of her fiance's manipulations. Very edgy, but realistic. Good job! Thanks for sharing.

I'm glad to see Christian fiction deal with reality. Years ago, when I tried to sell one of my first novels, the response I got the most was, this is just too realistic for us. So who says Christianity removes us from reality, from the bad things? Our children will have to deal with some of it, why can't the books we write for them show how God can be in all situations, not just the happy-ever-after ones?

Therese,

A big Amen from me! Christians are not isolated from life; they are just supposed to live it differently. We make bad decisions, have a sense of humor, get into less than desireable situations and have pain. How do we, as Christians deal with them? At least some of us want to know that.

I am dumbfounded that you recieved a responce that your book was too realistic? Too realistic??? What world does the CBA think we live in??? Sure we are not OF this world, but we certaintly live IN it! And our children live in it! And how the heck are they suppossed to build up strong spirutual armour if they are not grounded in the reality of the attacks they will face???

Sorry. Of all the foolish things I have ever heard about the CBA, that is the worst. Had to vent that out. I'm ok, now. Really, I am.

Really great work, Michelle! We need more books out there like this for teens, I think. Let them see how hard it is to fight nature--so maybe they'll guard themselves.

Reply to This

That is my hope anyway. I've had kids as young as 12 read this book and they loved it and never thought it was too edgy. LOL!

Reply to This

It's unfortunate, but I think that a lot of what we (I mean people over 30....) think is edgy may be everyday stuff for the teenage/young adult crowd...
